Directions for use

1. Introduction of Thommen 1000 Altimeter

Your new Thommen 1000 is one of the finest pocket altimeters / barometers available for sports use. To make the best use of this Precision instrument, please read this information carefully to rapidly comprehend the points you need to remember to obtain accurate readings.

The Thommen 1000 is temperature-compensated, i.e., there is no change in the reading when the temperature changes, but the air pressure does not.

However, air of different temperatures and humidity also has a different specific gravity, which results in a variation in the atmospheric pressure distribution. If you require exceptionally high accuracy, you will find more information on how to correct for these effects and on the physical principles of barometric altitude measurement in our booklet «The Barometric Measurement of Altitude», obtainable from your dealer.

2. Altitude measurement with Thommen 1000 Altimeter

Altitude is indicated on the adjustable outer scale of the Thommen 1000. The scale is divided into 20 m (50-foot) increments from sea level to 3000 m (10000 feet). The instrument, however, is calibrated from 300 m (1000 feet) below sea level to 4500 m (15000 feet) above sea level. To register altitudes above 3000 m (10000 feet), the needle continues rotating above the 3000 m (10000-foot) mark so that 4000 m (11 000 feet) is indicated at the 1000 m (1000-foot) mark, etc. The instrument will not be damaged by altitudes to 15 000 m (50 000 feet).

When measuring altitude, proceed as follows:

a) Set the elevation Accurately on the instrument at the starting point of your hike. It can be obtained from a topographical map or, in Switzerland and other countries, from a railway timetable book or posted on the station building.

b) If you observe the steps mentioned below, your Thommen 1000 will now continuously provide an accurate altitude reading throughout the hike.

Naturally, any altimeter will be affected by atmospheric pressure fluctuations. For example, an error amounting to several tens of meters can arise when the weather changes. However, the effects of such atmospheric pressure variations can be canceled out by taking the following steps:

Whenever you reach a point of known elevation – as indicated by a map, railway station sign, route marker, etc. check the reading. If there is a discrepancy, reset the altimeter by turning the serrated adjusting ring.

In the absence of such checks at known elevations, measured differences of height greater than 500 m (1500 ft) or over a horizontal distance of more than 10 km (5 miles) will probably not be as precise as otherwise.

3. Use Thommen 1000 as «weather barometer»

You can also use your Thommen 1000 as an accurate weather barometer.

For stationary use, turn the protective glass with the serrated adjusting ring until the red mark coincides precisely with the pointer. If the barometric pressure changes with time, the pointer will move along the red arrow on the glass. The movement toward the tip of the arrow indicates falling pressure and rising pressure toward the arrow’s open end. When underway, you will check the reading of your Thommen 1000 occasionally at points of known altitude (see Altitude measurement). If you find it necessary to read – just the altitude scale clockwise means the air pressure is falling, while a counterclockwise correction means it is rising. The reference point, in this case, is the position of the zero point of the altitude scale concerning the barometer scales (also refer to 4. b), reduced barometric pressure.

4. Measurement of barometric pressure with Thommen 1000

a) Absolute barometric pressure

Local air pressure between 560 and 790 mmHg (22…31 inHg) on the red scale and between 750 and 1050 mbar (blue scale) is indicated fully automatically by your Thommen 1000.

b) Reduced barometric pressure (QNH)

You can determine the barometric pressure reduced to sea level (called QNH in aviation) for your location by setting the point’s geographical elevation on the altimeter. Then the zero mark of the altitude scale will show the air pressure reduced to sea level on the barometric scales.

c) Mean barometric pressure

If you wish to determine the mean or relative barometric pressure for a particular elevation, set the zero mark of the altitude scale to 760 mmHg (29.9 inHg) resp. 1013 mbar. Now you can read the mean barometric pressure by imagining a straight line from the altitude scale to the center.

5. Accessories for Thommen 1000 Altimeter

A cord and two combination holders are supplied with every Thommen 1000. To carry the instrument around your neck, attach the cord to the cover, as shown in the sketch on the paper band.

One combination holder (with adhesive tape) attaches the instrument to a wall, your car dashboard, etc. After fastening the holder to the desired surface, mount the Thommen 1000 on pins 1.

To set the instrument on a desk or table, cut the triangular support 2 out of the other combination holder and insert its ears 3 into holes 4. The support can be positioned at the desired angle. Or this combination holder can be used as a second wall fastener, either in its entirety or the cut-out portion (item 5) alone.
